Photos: Heart – Live @ Music for Relief Benefit 2014
On the spectrum of female fronted and formed bands, Heart must rank somewhere in the top 10 of all time. Ann Wilson is one heck of a singer and Nancy Wilson is a great guitarist and songwriter. When i started buying vinyl over 15 years ago i used to see Heart records all the time in bargain bins for a dollar or less. The holy grail was Dreamboat Annie – the 1976 debut album with Magic Man, Crazy on You and the title track – which i quickly snatched up the first time I came across it. Earlier this year I was stoked when i had the opportunity to photograph them at Club Nokia in Los Angeles at Linkin Park’s Music for Relief 2014 benefit concert.
In addition to Heart and Linkin Park, The Offspring and Bad Religion also performed at the show. In fact, Heart’s set was actually a surprise appearance – only Offspring, Bad Religion and Linkin Park were billed originally on the line-up. For this performance Heart took the stage as the core duo – sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson – and performed two songs – CSNY’s Carry On and their own classic Crazy On You.
The only bummer (for me) shooting this show was the dreadful angle in which photographers were forced to shoot. The stage was super high, and the photo pit was super small and narrow forcing us to shoot essentially up their noses (which in the 1980’s might have been a rad angle). But you can only take what your given, and all and all I think the pictures came out pretty good. And the show was awesome, and benefited a great cause – so i really can’t complain!
