After a combined 20 plus years of releasing music with Blur and Gorillez, 2014 marked the first time that Damon Albarn has released music under his own name. To celebrate the release of his debut album Everyday Robots, Damon Albarn performed a number of special shows at SXSW with a full band including four string players. I managed to catch and photograph Albarn while he performed at the Austin Convention Center during an NPR live session taping.
Although Damon Albarn will always be most associated with his other outfits, his debut solo album was terrific and different than anything he’s produced previously. The album also features a collaboration with the reclusive Brian Eno and was nominated for a 2014 Mercury Prize. During this SXSW Convention Center set – and his main showcase at Stubbs and the Fader Fort in Austin, TX – Albarn performed a catalog spanning set that even included a rariety from his short lived side project with Clash member Paul Simonon The Good, The Bad and The Queen
