The Weeknd - Live @ The Forum, Los Angeles

The Weeknd – Live @ The Forum, Los Angeles

Canadian R&B singer The Weeknd has had a huge 2015. After headlining a handful of major festivals – including Coachella & Outside Lands (here on the West Coast), The Weeknd released his second album “The Beauty Behind the Madness” which hit #1 on the Billboard album charts.

Photos: John Legend @ SXSW 2015 – Featured on &

John Legend is the most photogenic performer i have ever shot. The dude exudes charisma and good vibes. Photographing him at the super intimate performance (a couple hundred people) at Cheer Up Charlies during SXSW 2015 was the highlight of my trip and the set of photos I produced ended up being the most licensed […]

Photos: The Goo Goo Dolls – Live @ The Troubadour 2014

I’ve gotta admit i’ve never been the biggest fan of the Goo Goo Dolls. During my high school years during the late 90’s these guys were getting popular and back then I kinda thought their songs were simply playing for the masses. I didn’t feel the soul in it. And i never paid attention as […]

Photos: Linkin Park – Live @ Vans Warped Tour 2014

I’m not known as a fan of modern rock. I tend to run away from the commercial ‘alternative’ rock radio stations, but I really do love Linkin Park. For awhile i thought it might be a bias (i grew up with drummer Rob Bourdon), but after seeing the band perform over a dozen times i’m […]

Photos: Local Natives – Live @ Outside Lands Festival 2014

IMHO Local Natives are one of the best (if not the best) LA indie rock band to come out of Los Angeles since Cold War Kids. When I first saw them perform at SXSW in 2009 (outside at Emo’s), i was high on them and knew these guys were the real deal. Five years later […]

Photos: Ryan Adams – Live @ Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2014

Ryan Adams is a fairly polarizing figure. You either like or hate both his personality and music. I happen to fall on the side of enjoying both his personality (fucking crazy, pretty funny), and music (eclectic and prolific).

Slash - George Thorogood - Canyon Club

On December 14th, 2014 at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, a number of Los Angeles based radio and music personalities gathered to raise money for former Pat ‘Parquet’ Kelley, a former KMET DJ who is fighting MS. Hosting the night were a slew of Los Angeles radio luminaries including Cynthia Fox and Jim Ladd, both of whom were DJ’s at KMET during the stations heyday in the 1970’s (lovingly Jim Ladd referred to Pat Kelley as his hero). Among the musicians who gathered included Little Feat members Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett, singer woman Janiva Mangress, songwriter Dan Navarro (writer of Pat Benatar’s mega hit We Belong) and blues monster George Thorogood (who also brought along his buddy Slash from LA’s own Guns N’ Roses).

Photos: The Flaming Lips – Live @ Outside Lands Festival 2014

    Flaming lips - Outside Lands - August 10th 2014 - Scott Dudelson

Photographing a Flaming Lips show is a joyous event. Its also one of the few festival bands in which you can be assured every credentialed photographer will be in the photo pit. The Flaming Lips always put on a great show.

I’ve now photographed the Flaming Lips at least a dozen times, and in 2004 in Vegas (at the short lived, but awesome Vegoose festival), I even joined the band on stage as one of the assorted dancing furries (footage can be found here). I’ve seen them at a variety of gigs ranging from Coachella and Vegoose to the original All Tomorrows Parties festival (on Queen Mary boat in 2004) and a rare performance at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery (where they covered Pink Floyd’s Darkside of the Moon in its entirety). My most recent adventure photographing the Flaming Lips occurred at the 2014 Outside Lands Festival in Golden Gate Park, CA.

Photos: Daniel Lanois – Live @ Ameoba Records 2014

    Daniel Lanois - Amoeba Records - December 8th, 2014
His name may not be familiar but Daniel Lanois has produced some of the best records of the past thirty years. The most notable records of the lot is U2’s Joshua Tree, but other records include late masterpieces by Bob Dylan (Time Out of Mind), Emmylou Harris (Stumble Into Grace) and Neil Young (Le Noise). But in addition to being a masterful producer, Daniel Lanois also has his own eclectic side solo projects and on December 8th, 2014 he performed with one of these projects at Ameoba Records in Hollywood, CA.

    Damon Albarn - SXSW - Convention Center - 3/14/14

After a combined 20 plus years of releasing music with Blur and Gorillez, 2014 marked the first time that Damon Albarn has released music under his own name. To celebrate the release of his debut album Everyday Robots, Damon Albarn performed a number of special shows at SXSW with a full band including four string players. I managed to catch and photograph Albarn while he performed at the Austin Convention Center during an NPR live session taping.

    Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2014

Since the disbandment of Led Zeppelin both Robert Plant and John Paul Jones have immersed themselves deep in Americana, country and bluegrass. While Plant has teamed with Allison Krauss, Buddy Miller and Patty Griffin over the past few years, bass player John Paul Jones has collaborated with a number of artists including Seasick Steve, Nickel Creek and most recently The David Rawlings Machine featuring Gillian Welch.

Photos: Billy Joe Shaver – Live @ Shotguns – SXSW 2014

Billy Joe Shaver is one of the baddest badasses in music. Shit, the dude shot another dude in the face during a bar fight at age 68 (the jury acquitted him for shooting in self-defense).

Shaver later went on to say: “I hit him right between a mother and a fucker. That was the end of that. He dropped his weapons and said, ‘I’m sorry.’ And [Shaver] said, ‘Well, if you had said that inside, there would have been no problem.”

When i learned that Billy Joe Shaver was playing at a shitty bar called Shotguns on Austin’s 6th street during SXSW I had to be there and photograph it.

Photos: Heart – Live @ Music for Relief Benefit 2014

    Nancy Wilson - Heart - Club Nokia - 1/11/2014
On the spectrum of female fronted and formed bands, Heart must rank somewhere in the top 10 of all time. Ann Wilson is one heck of a singer and Nancy Wilson is a great guitarist and songwriter. When i started buying vinyl over 15 years ago i used to see Heart records all the time in bargain bins for a dollar or less. The holy grail was Dreamboat Annie – the 1976 debut album with Magic Man, Crazy on You and the title track – which i quickly snatched up the first time I came across it. Earlier this year I was stoked when i had the opportunity to photograph them at Club Nokia in Los Angeles at Linkin Park’s Music for Relief 2014 benefit concert.

    Killer Mike - El-P - Run the Jewels - August 8th, 2014

Prior to photographing Run the Jewels at the 2014 Outside Lands Festival I had no idea that Killer Mike and El-P had been collaborating in a ‘super-group.’ Apparently they’d been doing it for a little while now, and in mid 2013 even released a self title debut record. I’ve photographed each of them individually over the years at various hip hop festivals, and while they are not the most exciting to shoot, they are each pretty great MC’s and Run the Jewels is an exciting collaboration.

Action Bronson - 11/8/2014 - Camp Flog Gnaw Festival

My #1 favorite hip hop artist to photograph is Action Bronson. I’ve probably photographed him now about half a dozen times and each time its more ridiculous and fun than the previous. Up until this recent Camp Flog Gnaw festival at the LA Memorial Coliseum, my favorite Action Bronson experience was at the 2013 Coachella festival where I captured pictures of him not only smoking a fat joint in the photo pit, but also throwing a pound of marijuana into the crowd (a security guy came up to me shortly thereafter asking if i had any rolling papers to go with the weed he caught).

Photos: Steve Earle – Live @ Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2014

Steve Earle - Hardly Strictly Bluegrass - 10/04/2014

If i were to describe Steve Earle in one word, it’d be: badass. He calls it as he sees it, and I respect this. He’s seen the high’s of the music industry (Grammy awards, critical acclaim), and the lows of life (drug addiction, prison). I’ve been a big fan of Steve Earle for many years, and from his first album Guitar Town in 1986 thru his 2013 album The Low Highway, he’s carried on the tradition of true Americana and never been scared to throw country music back in Nashville’s face. Along with Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle is always a staple at the free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in Golden Gate Park, and i’m always stoked to see him there.
