I love music of all types and genres. But if I had to pick one genre that I feel closest too and understand best, its probably what is termed ‘alternative country.’ Alt-country traces its roots back to the late 60′s and early 70′s when artists both inside and outside of Nashville turned their backs on […]

Photos: Local Natives – Live @ Outside Lands Festival 2014

IMHO Local Natives are one of the best (if not the best) LA indie rock band to come out of Los Angeles since Cold War Kids. When I first saw them perform at SXSW in 2009 (outside at Emo’s), i was high on them and knew these guys were the real deal. Five years later […]

Photos: Steve Winwood – Live @ The Honda Center, Anaheim

I am a big fan of Steve Winwood. I love his singing with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic is one of my favorite bands of the late 60′s/early 70′s, and I even have a soft spot for some of his cheesy 1980′s output. For this 2014 tour, including this Anaheim, CA tour stop on October […]

The Rolling Stones (w/Mick Taylor) – Live @ The Staples Center

The Rolling Stones (w/Mick Taylor) – Live @ The Staples Center, 2013. Concert photography by Scott Dudelson. My favorite era Rolling Stones is 1969-1973 with Mick Taylor on guitar. During this Staples Center show on the ’50 and Counting’ tour, Mick Taylor guested on four songs including an epic jam on ‘Can’t You Hear Me […]

Tyler the Creator (of Odd Future) @ Coachella 2013. Concert photography by Scott Dudelson. Tyler the Creator was all over Coachella 2013. Although he did not perform, he was spotted during Earl Sweatshirt’s set, in the photo pit for Pusha T (at which time i showed him this pic and got an indifferent reaction along […]

Action Bronson at Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival 1182014 by scott dudelson Photos: Action Bronson Live @ Camp Flog Gnaw 2014

My #1 favorite hip hop artist to photograph is Action Bronson. I’ve probably photographed him now about half a dozen times and each time its more ridiculous and fun than the previous. Up until this recent Camp Flog Gnaw festival at the LA Memorial Coliseum, my favorite Action Bronson experience was at the 2013 Coachella festival where I captured pictures of him not only smoking a fat joint in the photo pit, but also throwing a pound of marijuana into the crowd (a security guy came up to me shortly thereafter asking if i had any rolling papers to go with the weed he caught).

Steve earle and the dukes at hardly strictly bluegrass October 4 2014 by Scott Dudelson Photos: Steve Earle Live @ Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2014

If i were to describe Steve Earle in one word, it’d be: badass. He calls it as he sees it, and I respect this. He’s seen the high’s of the music industry (Grammy awards, critical acclaim), and the lows of life (drug addiction, prison). I’ve been a big fan of Steve Earle for many years, and from his first album Guitar Town in 1986 thru his 2013 album The Low Highway, he’s carried on the tradition of true Americana and never been scared to throw country music back in Nashville’s face. Along with Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle is always a staple at the free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in Golden Gate Park, and i’m always stoked to see him there.

Sun Kil Moon 2 at sxsw 2014 by scott dudelson Photos: Sun Kil Moon Live @ SXSW 2014

Along with Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Mark Kozelek (aka Sun Kil Moon) ranks among my all time favorite songwriters. He’s as prolific, demanding, and as interesting a personality as Young or Dylan, and like those two legends, Kozelek does whatever the fuck he wants and makes whatever music he wants. I’ve always respected artists who follow their art, their vision and their truths, and no one will claim Kozelek has done anything but that throughout his career.

Outkast Andre 3000 Big Boi at Life is Beautiful by Scott Dudelson Photos: Outkast Live @ Life is Beautiful Festival 2014

I admire Outkast. Not so much for their music (which i think is fine), but rather for the genius marketing move on their recent reunion tour; they became the first act to ever route their tour exclusively around headlining slots at music festivals, ultimately hitting 40 around the world. Impressive shit (and lots of bank for Big Boi and Andre 3000, presumably). (more…)

Jackson Browne at Way over yonder festival by scott dudelson Photos: Jackson Browne Live @ Way Over Yonder Festival 2014

I like to think of myself as an edgy dude; someone who understands, advocates appreciates music left of the mainstream. I also have no shame in admitting that I love artists like Steve Winwood and Jackson Browne (whose late 70′s album Running on Empty is one of my all time favorites). But I love Jackson Browne for much more than his music; I have had past one on one and group setting encounters with Browne and he’s as gracious, down to earth, and sincere as he plays in his songs. I’m an all around fan. (more…)

Valerie June live at outside lands 2014 photo by scott dudelson Photos: Valerie June Live @ Outside Lands 2014

Hailing from Memphis, TN, Valerie June may be one of music’s most promising Americana artists. Her 2013 album release Pushing Against a Stone perfectly blended folk, blues, soul and gospel and became one of the albums I played over and over last year. I was super excited when i learned she was set to play the Outside Lands Festival in Golden Gate Park, CA on August 9th, 2014. (more…)

Surface Rising with Bumblefoot live at life is beutiful festival concert photo by scott dudelson 2 Photos: Bumblefoot Live @ Life is Beautiful Festival 2014

Who is Bumblefoot, and how did he get such an awesome name? I was asked that by a couple people at the Life is Beautiful festival in Vegas. I don’t really have the answer to the latter question (read it on wikipedia, but his real name is Ron Thal – not as cool). A fellow photographer at the Life is Beautiful festival did let me know that Bumblefoot is a former guitar player from the recent era Guns N’ Roses incarnation. Based on the fact he was standing in front of me and performing in a band called Surface Rising, i am assuming this is what Bumblefoot has been up to since leaving Guns N’ Roses. (more…)

Butch Walker Live at Fonda Music Box October 1 2014 by scottdudelson Photos: Butch Walker Live @ George Harrison Tribute at the Music Box
In the late 1990′s Butch Walker was best known as the singer of one-hit wonder rock outfit Marvelous 3. They had a pretty good single with “Freak of the Week” in about 1998, but the band went quiet after that. But Butch Walker in the last decade has had quite a career revival. (more…)

Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes performing live at way over yonder festival photo by scott dudelson Photos: Chris Robinson Brotherhood Live @ Way Over Yonder Festival 2014

Chris Robinson will always been best known as the singer and focal point of The Black Crowes. And that’s great, the Black Crowes had some really good years (the one’s with Marc Ford on guitar being the best for my money). But post-Black Crowes, Chris Robinson has not gotten the attention he deserves because he’s still got it going on, and his new outfit The Chris Robinson Brotherhood is one hell of a band. (more…)

Ryan Adams is a fairly polarizing figure. You either like or hate both his personality and music. I happen to fall on the side of enjoying both his personality (fucking crazy, pretty funny), and music (eclectic and prolific). (more…)
